>> Expectations

As you would expect for this time of the year, we discussed the theme of "Jesus is Messiah" at our church this Palm Sunday. I wasn't sure what to expect as there are only so many ways you can preach the Holy Week/Easter message, right? But this sermon was different...and it hit home. Our pastor began to dive into the Jewish expectations of the Messiah - a Savior who would conquer the Pagans, restore the temple & worship, and establish peace and justice.

But in reality, Christ was killed by the Pagans, he criticized the temple & worship, and he endured violence and injustice through his death on the cross. What a stark contrast between the Jewish expectations of the Messiah and the actual experience of the Messiah. They missed it -- they missed Him -- the one they awaited and longed for.

The clash of expectations vs. reality. Can't we relate to this scenario? As I sat and listened to our pastor, I could think of so many situations in my life where "missed" expectations have resulted in me missing out on the wonderful reality before me. Unmet expectations don't have to mean disappointment. Sure, sometimes expectations are necessary and can end in disappointment if unmet. But I would dare to say that, more often than not, we can be too focused on our expectations and forget to take in the beauty of the moment, whatever it may hold.

So here's to enjoying the surprises, remembering that He is ultimately in control, and expecting the unexpected.

// "O Holy Spirit, descend plentifully into my heart.
Enlighten the dark corners of this neglected dwelling
and scatter there Thy cheerful beams. \\   -- St. Augustine

Blessings to you during this Holy Week.

Until next time,
